Lorenzo Musetti celebrated his win over Miomir Kecmanovic dramatically in the 2024 U.S. Open. After defeating the Serbian in an almost four-hour match, the Italian promptly took off his shirt and screamed in joy after vanquishing his opponent.
As he celebrated his win, the crowd on hand chanted “Lorenzo” in support after the 22-year-old’s impressive accomplishment. He will face Brandon Nakashima in the third round on August 30 (Friday).
For Musetti to be more demonstrative after defeating Kecmanovic makes sense considering just how close to elimination the Italian was throughout the night. Musetti faced two match points in the fifth set before pulling out the 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory over the Serbian star.
Musetti’s latest success in the U.S. Open is just another indicator of the improved form he’s shown in recent months. At Wimbledon, Musetti reached the semi-final for the first time, falling to Novak Djokovic.
Then during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the Italian defeated Felix Aiger-Aliassime for the bronze medal in the men’s singles event. In doing so, Musetti became the first Italian tennis player to win an Olympic medal in 100 years.
After the bronze medal win, Musetti couldn’t contain his excitement as he celebrated his historic win. “I’ve been eating plain pasta and chicken for three months, basically,” Musetti said after his win, per ESPN.
“So I think eating a pizza is the least I can do tonight. … A magnificent moment.” Coincidentally enough, Musetti lost to Djokovic in the Olympic semi-final and after his bronze medal win, the 22-year-old explained how it could help springboard his career moving forward as he looks to make noise.
“I think it’s a starting point,” Musetti shared with reporters, [h/t Ubitennis.com]. “I come from a magnificent moment and I am confirming it week after week, so it can be said that there has been a leap in quality.”
Along with the bronze, Musetti hoped his form would carry over to the ATP Finals in Turin at the end of the season. “That is definitely the dream,” he continued.

“It is a challenging goal, but not impossible. There are still many points and many tournaments left, so this bronze also gives me hope of ensuring a certain status. This continuity can help me achieve all the goals I have.”
For now, he will have to focus on defeating Nakashima, the American, in what is surely to be an interesting matchup between the two stars. Along with Musetti and Nakashima’s intriguing matchup, another contest to keep an eye on is Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton’s semi-final rematch.
“I am really looking forward to it,” Shelton said of his rematch with Tiafoe. “We had a great battle in the quarters last year and I am sure it will be another popcorn match.”
